school Project - "a virtual museum of the 20th. century" game: School - Real Life year: 2001 Based on the fact that this map was a school project I didn't had to care about performance as long as my teacher was able to view the level. Notes: Every student in Bavaria/Germany has to make a student research project in his final year at secondary school which influences the mark of his final exam. I got the possibility to create a virtual museum which shows the art of the 20th. century with the Quake3Arena engine. Maybe I will publish the theoretical part in the near future, until now I just annotate the pictures. The given orders from my art teacher were to rearrange and to reinterpret the pictures and sculptures in a new way by using the advantages of a vitual museum. I tried to to create different intensions and views regarding the pictures. I tried to achieve this by transforming the artist´s intention into interior design or by translating 2D paintings in 3D. The creative aspects of these transformations were more important then the realisation with Q3Radiant (regarding my mark).
Fauvism - Henri Matisse - "Great Interieur" The original picture had no concrete point of view and it was a real challenge to rearange it in a 3D room with a similar effect for the viewer. (1024x768 / 112 kb)
Expressionism - "Die Brücke" "Die Brücke" (the bridge) was a group of artists. I derived the complete interior design from their name, only the background contains small persons which are from one of their paintings. (1024x768 / 70 kb)
Cubism - Pablo Picasso - "Ambroise Vollard" At this model I translated the cubism elements into 3D . Instead of creating the shades with textures Itried to rebuild it witth lighting and 3D structure. (1024x768 / 37 kb)
Naturalism/ Abstract - the way of Kandinsky The intention of the following picture is to show the evolution of Kandinsky´s style from naturalism to abstract painting ( he was the first real abstract painter). Both sculptures contain a lot of different moving objects. (1024x768 / 103-192 kb)
Expressionism - Georg Schrimpf - "Girl at the window" The original point of view of the painting was behind the girl, while I wanted to show the other side. The small image on the table next to the girl is the horizon taken from the original picture. (1024x768 / 203 kb)
Expressionism - Max Beckmann - self-portrait These are a lot of alpha channel shaders taken from one of his woodcuts arranged in a row. I try to symbolise Beckmann's grim thoughts and intensions. (1024x768 / 186 kb)
The nationalistic/ fascistic art of Europe during the World War II the dark hole with nationalistic/ fascistic art around should symbolise the deep fall of europe during WWII. (1024x768 / 65 kb)
Bauhaus - Max Bill - "Unity of three similar volumes" instead of canting the sculpture I simply canted the groud of it. Just a small piece of art here. (1024x768 / 116 kb)
Dadaism - own interpretation Just like the original dadaist artists I didn't create something new, all parts you can see here are prefabs of my NS:CO maps. I only rearranged them very accidently and added a lot of movement and noises to create a real chaos feeling. (1024x768 / 92 kb)
Surrealism - own interpretation dreams were an important factor of the surrealism and I used the possibilities of the 3D render technology to create a real strange dream world with noises, moving lights and an ordinary architecture which really gives you creeps. This was definitively the most funny part of my school project. Maybe I'll find the .map files again and compile it with ydnar q3map2. (1024x768 / 99 kb)
Abstract Painting - Piet Mondrian - "Rythm out of black lines" In real life, the picture is hanging on a wall. Here I tested the effect on the viewer if he walks on it. Even if you don't see the whole painting while standing on it, you still can feel the quiet feeling of it. (1024x768 / 148 kb)
Suprematism - Kasimir Malewitsch Krasimir Malewitsch painted very basic forms, sometimes even a complete black picture. Here I tried to find out if adding a moving 3D element destroys the original feeling . (1024x768 / 68 kb)
Hard-Edge-Painting - Kenneth Noland - "Swing" This is another small piece of art where I only wanted to reconstruct the original shader with different light sources again. (1024x768 / 61 kb)
Op-Art - own interpretation It was really difficult to create a new op-art effect in a real time 3D render environment. I used several small, metal plates which are moving in small groupes in addition to a chrome env-shader. If you are looking long enough on the picture you suddenly start to see waves. The second effect is a little bit more difficult. If you are looking skew on the object you start to see lines which are disapearing at once. These effects exist of couress only in my interpretation.. (1024x768 / 164 kb)
Concrete Art - Josef Albers - "Homage at the quadrat" Instead of placing this small piece of art at the ground again I just placed it under the ceiling. (1024x768 / 172 kb)
Abstract Painting - Alfred Mannessier - "Night of Genthsemane" I rebuildt the basic structure and colors of the original picture but stilled missed the feeling of chaos which are present in abstract paintings. That is why I added the normaly unpopular "Hall of Mirror" effect which creates a real confusing background for the picture. (1024x768 / 77kb)
Pop Art - own interpretation At this interpretation my basic intension was to mix the style of the old pop art artists with the new 'pop' from the internet. I randomly picked out several common and uncommon pictures from the net and reworked them with some filters. (1024x768 / 178 kb)
